“Don’t Disappear” Part 1 Re-edited

Chapter 1

Vicka! Where are you, fatty?” She heard the angry voice of her oldest brother Viktor who rushed into the apartment like a hurricane, “I said come here!” he shouted from the threshold.
She was sitting in the room at her desk, doing her homework. He leaped to her and forcefully struck her on the head. Their mother ran in from the kitchen at once.

“Viktor, what are you doing? Why are you beating her? She’s just a little girl—”

He didn’t let her finish, turning his face to his mother abruptly. “Are you sure?” he shouted. “Do you know the age of the guy she’s dating? He’s frigging almost twice her age! And, what do you think he wants from her?”

“We are not dating,” Vicka cried.

“Shut up!” screamed Viktor. “Everyone is laughing at you. I told you,” he pointed at his mother, “we ought to forbid her from attending such late training sessions for the Circus. I’m almost twenty and I come home earlier than this fourteen-year-old hussy. It’s over.” He turned to Vicka. “Your circus days are over. From now on, you stay home!”

“No! I will keep going!” Vicka blurted out, turning her face to him. He struck her in the head with a swinging blow and left the room.

Their mother stood dazed, staring at her daughter. This was all news to her.

“What’s he talking about? Are you dating somebody?” She tried to calm Vicka’s crying, even though she herself was upset. “Listen to me, daughter. I realize that you’ve been involved in the Circus for several years now. I know that you like it, but you really do come home late, after nine o’clock. It’s not right. Maybe you can just do the Sunday trainings. You see, you could go all morning on Sunday.”

“No! Do you hear me? Nyet!” Vicka shook her head. “Our coach moved our time this autumn to two hours later because the gym at the police station closed for repairs, so the officers were temporarily using the city’s public gym.”

“Why did they move the circus’ training time? You all are too young to stay out that late. Why didn’t they have the police work out late at night?”

“Do I decide that?” Vicka shot her eyes at her mother, Larisa.

“So...what is Viktor talking about? What grown-up guy are people seeing you hang around with? Is he really twenty-eight? Who is he?”

“Nobody!” Vicka threw herself across the bed, crying. What a ridiculous life, she thought. Sergei escorted me home at night a few times and the gossip is already flowing. What can I do? I want to see him.

If she had only known what her future would hold at this moment in time, she would have listened to her brother’s advice, and forgot the gym and the handsome, twenty-four-year old officer with wavy chestnut hair.

It was early autumn in the late seventies in the Soviet Union. Sergei Nilovski and his friend Anton Darenko were riding in the car and discussing their training routine.

“I’ve noticed Sergei that you’ve taken a stronger interest in working out. You’ve started staying at the gym longer and longer.” Anton smiled, turning the steering wheel, “especially since last month after your meeting that young, red haired girl.”

“Oh, quit it,” Sergei slightly nugged his friend’s shoulder.

“Too bad their coach keeps quickly kicking us out of the gym,” added Anton. “I’d like to see them longer too. It’s fun to see the Circus.”

“It’s definitely much more enjoyment than our serious training,” Sergei said and they both smiled, recalling the Circus Studio.

Always noisy and cheerful, the young performers jumped, rolled and flipped effortlessly through the air to their loud music. They showed off new ideas to each other and laughed at their innovative tricks. One evening, the officers were leaving the gym when the young, cheerful girl bumped into Sergei in the doorway.

“Oh, sorry sir,” she stopped abruptly, surprised and embarrassed. “It was an accident,” and she continued on her way into the gym.

Sergei stood enchanted, gazing at the place where her face had been just a second before—those green eyes so bright and smiling, and her long, wavy hair appearing, and then vanishing like a flash of light.

Anton interrupted his friend’s memory, “I remember those crazy kids almost trampled us,” he said, laughing. “But I see that red-head is smiling at you in a different way these days.”

“Really?” Sergei glanced at his friend. “I think it’s just your imagination.”

Sergei hadn’t told anyone how he came back one evening and met the girl in the gym’s foyer.

“Good evening,” he said then he approached the group of chatting, laughing girls. “May I talk to you?” Sergei said, looking into her green eyes.

“Yeah,” she stopped in front of him.

“What is your name?”

“Vicka...Vicka Zotova,” she whispered.

“Vicka? Short for Victoria?”

She nodded.

“What a beautiful name!”

“Thank you,” she said shyly, glancing up at him.

He felt as if an electric shock had gone through him. Her youthful beauty fascinated him—her lips, her nose, and those magnetic, smiling green eyes. There was something special about them, and for a second, he was taken aback and could hardly gather his thoughts.

“My name is Sergei Nilovski,” he said. “How do you get home at such a late hour?”

“I run,” she replied as her friends called her to go.

“Tell them you’re okay.” Sergei smiled. “There’s no need to be afraid of me. I work for the police department. How about an escort, so you don’t have to be afraid and run all the way home?”

Vicka waived bye to her friends and turned her head back to Sergei. “Our coach told us who’s training here and also he said that you’ll be going back to the police academy soon.”

“You got it.” Sergei smiled, opening exit door. “Let’s go?”

“Hmm...all right,” Vicka smiled back. Ever since that evening, he walked her home from practice almost every time.

Together they found a common language. Vicka was genuine and easily amused—so the minutes to her apartment buildings flew by in an instant. As they would approach her house, he’d always tell her jokingly, “Welcome home, kiddo!” He would lift a hand to his chest, wave, and say, “Bye-bye, sweetie.”

She entered the house and ran up to the third floor in one breath. He watched the staircase window until she opened her apartment door and disappeared behind it.

Occasionally, on the weekends, Sergei and Vicka met each other in the museum or the art gallery.

During this time, she began to struggle with her studies. Then, one day her chemistry teacher said, when she hesitated with her answer, “So, you can’t find time to study? You should spend less time with older guys in parks.”

Vicka was shocked. How did he know? Her face burned with embarrassment. The class began to whisper and laugh.

“Vicka has two older brothers,” somebody came to her defense. However, it was too late. Silly gossip was being spread. In addition, she endured a fair share of suffering, even though the boys at school feared dealing with her. They knew she was very strong and athletic and could stand up for herself. Unfortunately, at home, it was a different story...

This was just brought to my attention. Dr. Paul Gailey in April wrote a paper on potential for Unit 4 Spent Fuel Pool to be a greater source of contamination than the original March 11, 2011 event.

I am glad that there are other people thinking about this.

He says:

* risk of a fire in fuel pool number 4 is real, and that the risks of contamination are so severe that an international effort is required.

* a nominal release of 10% of the SFP 4 inventory of cesium and strontium would represent 3-10 times the March 2011 release amounts

* Spent fuel pools are not protected in the same way as reactor cores, and the unit 4 building is seriously damaged

* the fuel rods currently produce about one megawatt (MVV) or more of waste energy in the form of heat (1,000,000 Watts!)

* If cooling water for the spent fuel pool is lost – either by collapse of the pool, formation of cracks in the pool, or other factors – a major release of radioactive material could result. Given the large amount of heat generated by the fuel rods, the temperature would rise quickly. These rods are surrounded by zirconium cladding, and at high temperatures, this cladding catalyzes hydrogen production, can generate additional heat, and even explode and burn (NRC, 2006).

* The water surrounding the fuel rods in the spent fuel pools serves two purposes: First, it conducts heat away from the fuel assemblies to avoid overheating. Second, it provides shielding from the extremely high radiation levels near the rods.

* loss of shielding by the cooling water could critically increase radiation levels in the entire Daiichi complex. High radiation is already a serious problem limiting worker and even robot access to the plant to perform repairs and mitigation, and to maintain cooling of the other spent fuel pools and reactors. Thus, a catastrophic failure of the unit 4 spent fuel pool could potentially cascade into additional releases from the other spent fuel pools and reactors.

This report is well documented and corresponds pretty well with my own research. There is room for like-minded folks to tell the truth.
