The human placenta could be an important source of stem cells for curing leukemia, sickle cell disease and other blood-related disorders, a new study reveals. These stem cells appear to have distinct advantages over the techniques currently used to fight such diseases, and they may one day provide an alternative treatment for people who cannot find matching bone marrow donors, researchers said.

04/20/09 - Anti-blindness stem cell therapy perfected -- LONDON, April 19 (UPI) -- British scientists say they have developed a stem procedure that will reverse the most common cause of blindness, age-related macular degeneration. The procedure, pioneered by the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London and Moorfields eye hospital, involves replacing a layer of degenerated eye cells with new ones obtained from embryonic stem cells, The Sunday Times of London reported.
