10/26/09 - Mobile phones cause brain cancer, says World Health Organisation World Health Organisation, WHO Author: Karl Flinders Posted: 08:11 26 Oct 2009 AddThis The World Health Organisation (WHO) has found links between the use of mobile phones and the development of brain cancer. The WHO has carried out a 10-year study that has evidence that heavy mobile users have a higher risk of developing brain tumours later in life, reports the Daily Telegraph. The results of the ?20m study are expected to be published. Elisabeth Cardis, who heads the report team, said, "In the absence of definitive results and in the light of a number of studies which, though limited, suggest a possible effect of radio frequency radiation, precautions are important."

06/18/09 - Health Buzz: Asbestos Health Emergency and Other Health News -- EPA Declares Public Health Emergency A fter Montana Mine Poisons Locals -- The Environmental Protection Agency declared its first ever public health emergency yesterday in a Montana community where residents were poisoned by asbestos from a nearby mine, the Associated Press reports. At least $125 million over the next five years will go toward cleaning up the town of Libby, where local miners wearing contaminated clothes and shoes unknowingly tracked asbestos from the mine into their homes. Another $6 million of federal grant money will go toward medical care for an estimated 500 people with asbestos-related illnesses. Those include residents of another town, Troy, Mont., who've also developed illnesses like lung cancer and asbestosis, the Washington Post reports. More than 200 people have died from asbestos poisoning linked to the mine, which is now closed, according to AP.

06/18/09 - Team homes in on genetic causes of neuroblastoma -- By Julie Steenhuysen -- CHICAGO (Reuters) - A missing stretch of DNA on a chromosome involved in nervous system development may help explain why some children are predisposed to a deadly type of tumor called neuroblastoma, researchers reported on Wednesday. The study is the first to show that repeats or deletions of a genetic sequence, as opposed to "spelling mistakes" in the four-letter genetic code -- influence cancer risk, said Dr. John Maris of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, whose study appears in the journal Nature.

06/18/09 - Agent Orange Continues to Poison Vietnam -- by Prof. Marjorie Cohn -- From 1961 to 1971, the U.S. military sprayed Vietnam with Agent Orange, which contained large quantities of Dioxin, in order to defoliate the trees for military objectives. Dioxin is one of the most dangerous chemicals known to man. It has been recognized by the World Health Organization as a carcinogen (causes cancer) and by the American Academy of Medicine as a teratogen (causes birth defects). Between 2.5 and 4.8 million people were exposed to Agent Orange. 1.4 billion hectares of land and forest - approximately 12 percent of the land area of Vietnam - were sprayed.

06/16/09 - 2008 confirmed rise in weather disasters-Red Cross -- By Patrick Worsnip -- UNITED NATIONS, June 16 (Reuters) - A global trend towards increasing weather-related disasters was confirmed in 2008, the second deadliest year in the past decade for natural catastrophes, an annual Red Cross report said on Tuesday. The number of people reported killed by natural disasters last year -- a total of 235,736 -- was surpassed only in 2004, the year of the Indian Ocean tsunami, said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The United Nations on Tuesday raised the prospect of "megadisasters" affecting millions of people in some of the world's biggest cities unless more is done to heed the threat of climate change. "We are going to see more disasters and more intense disasters as a result of climate change," UN Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs John Holmes said at the opening of a four-day conference on reducing disaster risks.

FARRELL -- The California Senate recently passed a bill to outlaw the sale of sippy cups and baby bottles that contain bisphenol A, or BPA, adding momentum to a campaign against the chemical that's gaining support in statehouses across the United States. In recent weeks, Minnesota outlawed baby-food containers made with the chemical that some scientific studies suggest is a health hazard for young children as well as adults. Chicago decided to nix baby bottles made with BPA from city shelves, and a ban in Connecticut passed the legislature and awaits the governor's signature.
